Project Read was developed by The Public Libraries of Jefferson County to encourage people to read more and become more familiar with their local libraries. It encourages people who are in the same city or state to read the same book.

ProjectRead:The Prince of Frogtown

The Public Libraries of Jefferson County’s fall selection is author Rick Bragg’s latest title The Prince of Frogtown. Libraries will continue to hold book discussions and film series throughout October. Check with your local library for programs and special appearances at some locations by Bragg. Thank you for helping us reach our goals for The Big Read: Project Mockingbird!

  1. Jefferson County Librarians and library staff contributed over 10,000 hours of time to planning and implementing 150 Big Read programs between November 2007 and May 15, 2008.
  2. Librarians, Library staff, and our major programming partner, The Birmingham Museum of Art, served—directly—102,452 adults and children (through Big Read programs and exhibitions).
  3. Jefferson County Libraries partnered with 60 schools and day care centers and 209 teachers to implement their programs.
  4. Libraries engaged 186 volunteers to help with Big Read events.
  5. Media broadcasts reached an estimated 1,076,053 viewers. The monetary value of these broadcasts was estimated at $25,545. The Big Read was featured on: Fox 6, ABC 33/40, NBC 13, and CBS 42. Print advertising was valued at $78,137.51. The Big Read was featured in: The Birmingham News, The Birmingham Times, Senior Living, Birmingham Weekly, Birmingham Magazine, Portico, Black & White, The Deep South Jewish Voice, The Leeds News, The North Jefferson News, and UAB's Kaleidoscope.
  6. projectmockingbird.org attracted 6,463 unique visitors between January 1 and May 13, 2008. Visitors spent an average of 2:37 on the site, generating 28,966 page views.
